What does a School Based Police Officer do?
School Based Officers have a variety of roles all aimed at promoting good citizenship both in school and in the wider community. Contrary to popular belief, SBOs are not in schools to police it; their role is to work with our young people to help educate them and to reduce the chances of them becoming future victims or perpetrators of crimes as they become functioning and integral members of our society as adults.
SBOs also involve themselves in extracurricular activities with various groups in and out of the school setting. This includes the introduction and running of relevant schemes, such as the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) programme, which is a successful peer mentoring initiative being embedded in high schools across the country.
